Vinyl Selection: ‘Hysteria’ by Def Leppard
Def Leppard had hit their stride with the 1983 breakthrough album, Pyromania. Using that momentum, the band got to work on a follow-up. However, the final product would not come easy or quick.
Producer Mutt Lange, who had a heavy hand in the success of Pyromania, left the project for his own personal reasons and replaced by the well-known songwriter Jim Steinman. After several months, it was evident that Steinman wasn’t a match for the band’s direction and the two parted. Bad would turn to worse on NYE 1984 when drummer Rick Allen lost an arm in a car accident.
In the end, Lange would rejoin Def Leppard and course correct the derailed project. Hysteria released in 1987 and quickly shot the group to super stardom.
