Today’s lesson? Don’t piss off an Engineering school.

Remember the Big Bass Drum Battle between Notre Dame and Purdue in 2021?

Long story short if you don’t go look at the link above – Purdue’s All American Marching Band famously has the world’s largest drum that had been at every game since 1979.  In 2017, Notre Dame renovated their stadium, and left visiting teams AND marching bands with a narrow steep staircase to enter their hallowed field, and the drum was too big to fit.  THEN Notre Dame decided not to let them (or anyone, it seems) use the main tunnel, so the feud began.

NOW, all these years later, Purdue has had enough.

In 2024, Notre Dame travels to the Boilermakers’ home turf, and the Purdue Engineering department has entered the chat. Purdue engineering professor Dave Cappelleri  “came up with the idea for the world’s smallest drum after Purdue received a Nanoscribe Photonic Professional GT2 3D printer” according to a post on Instagram.

The new drum will be “the width of a human hair”.

Won’t be a spectacle ON the field like the big boy drum, but it’s definitely a “gotcha” for the smarties.
